Oil Leaking From Sunken Ship MV Rak, Coast Guard Responding To Spill

In what could pose an ecological threat to the Mumbai coast, an oil leak was today reported from the sunken cargo vessel MV Rak.

The leak has occurred due to the ingress of water in the cargo hull, officials said.

"Since last night, oil has been observed leaking from the sunken vessel Rak Carrier at an approximate rate of 1.5 to 2 tonnes per hour. The oil has spread about 7 nautical miles around the vessel", a Defence press release said.
Coast Guard ship Samudra Prahari, which was on patrol, responded and used oil dispersant to neutralise the spilled oil.

"Operation 'Paryavaran Suraksha - 2/2011 has been launched by Coast Guard. Another vessel ICGS Sankalp has also been pressed for augmenting the oil spill response", the release added.

Authorities have been directed to tell fishermen to refrain from fishing in the affected area.

Meanwhile, the state Pollution Control Board has been asked to collect and check samples of the spill.

The Panama-flagged vessel sank off the coast of Mumbai on Thursday, with 60,000 metric tonnes of coal, 290 tonnes of fuel oil and 50 tonnes of diesel on board.

Coast Guard sources had earlier said that they could see oil layers around the place where the 225 meter-long vessel sank. But they had described it as "negligible" and said it would not create any ecological problems.

    New touch-screen BlackBerrys being launched

Research In Motion Ltd. on Wednesday unveiled five new BlackBerry phones with touch screens, as it hopes to revive the line's dwindling appeal in the face of competition from the iPhone and Android smartphones.

The new phones had been expected earlier this year, but were delayed. Though the company is profitable and seeing growing sales, it is increasingly seen as a has-been that missed the chance to parlay the BlackBerry's popularity as a corporate email device into mass-market dominance.

RIM, which is based in Waterloo, Ontario, is updating its high-end Bold models to include touch screens. It's also launching two Torch models with big screens but no physical keyboards, mimicking the basic design of the iPhone.

RIM launched a keyboard-less touch-screen phone called the Storm in 2008, more than a year after the first iPhone, but the Storm's quirky design and poor software made it a flop.

"The `all-touchscreen' Torch has been a while coming as a natural successor to the disappointing Storm, particularly when the smartphone market has gone touchscreen mad over the past 18 months," said Malik Saadi, an analyst at Informa.

The phones run a new version of the BlackBerry operating system, which RIM says is much faster, particularly for Web browsing.

AT&T Inc. said it would launch a Torch model with a physical keyboard this month, and the all-touch Torch and a Bold model later this year. It didn't announce prices.

RIM's stock rose 82 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $24.97 in morning trading Wednesday, bouncing off a five-year low of $24.10 hit Tuesday.

The Bold models will be the first BlackBerrys to include so-called Near-Field Communications chips, so they can be used in place of credit cards by swiping them across properly equipped payment terminals. Many companies, including cellphone carriers like AT&T and Web companies like Google Inc. are promoting the idea of using phones as digital "wallets."

Car Owners May Soon Have To Pay More For Diesel

Driving your diesel car might soon be expensive if the Finance Minister decides to end the subsidy on diesel for passenger cars. That's because while petrol prices are linked to market rates, the government gives a subsidy of Rs. 6.08 per litre on diesel.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today hinted that the government may look at a dual pricing for diesel. Fifteen per cent of the diesel produced is consumed by passenger vehicles so the government might remove the subsidy on diesel for passenger cars.

Because of huge difference in petrol and diesel prices, currently at
Rs. 22 per litre, the share of diesel cars in overall passenger car sales has been increasing rapidly. Diesel cars currently account for 30 per cent of car sales and the analysts expect diesel car sales to hit 50 per cent by 2015.

Replying on the debate on price rise, Mr Mukherjee said, "High prices are there… Certain suggestions have come... but one thing to do... heavily tax those sectors which are not essential... out of 100 barrel of diesel… 10 per cent goes to industry... agriculture uses 12 per cent…. 8 per cent for power… 15 per cent for passenger cars where we can accept your suggestion and try work out that these sections are not subsidized…"

Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy has also said that the government is mulling over the possibility of a differential subsidy package on diesel.

Reacting to the possibility, India's largest car manufacturer Martui said that a move to decrease the gap in petrol and diesel prices will result in higher sales of petrol model. Diesel engines are more sophisticated today so sales wouldn’t plummet, the company said but overall demand may be impacted in the short term if price of both fuels spike.

    Mobile Viruses

A mobile virus is an electronic virus that targets mobile phones or wireless-enabled Pads.

As wireless phone and PDA networks become more numerous and more complex, it has become more difficult to secure them against electronic attacks in the form of viruses or other malicious software

    History:
The first instance of a mobile virus occurred in June 2004 when it was discovered that a company called Ojam had engineered an anti-piracy Trojan virus in older versions of their mobile phone game Mosquito. This virus sent SMS text messages to the company without the user's knowledge. This virus was removed from more recent versions of the game; however it still exists on older, unlicensed versions. These older versions may still be distributed on file-sharing networks and free software download web sites.

In July 2004, computer hobbyists released a proof-of-concept mobile virus named Cabir. This virus replicates itself on Bluetooth wireless networks.

In March 2005 it was reported that a computer worm called Comm-warrior-A has been infecting Symbian
series 60 mobile phones. This worm replicates itself through the phone's Multimedia Messaging System (MMS). It sends copies of itself to other phone owners listed in the phone user's address book. Although the worm is not considered harmful, experts agree that it heralds a new age of electronic attacks on mobile phones.

    Common mobile viruses:
Cabir: Infects mobile phones running on Symbian OS. When a phone is infected, the message 'Caribe' is displayed on the phone's display and is displayed every time the phone is turned on. The worm then attempts to spread to other phones in the area using wireless Bluetooth signals.

Duts: A parasitic file infecter virus and is the first known virus for the PocketPC platform. It attempts to infect all EXE files in the current directory (infects files that are bigger than 4096 bytes)

Skulls: A trojan horse piece of code. Once downloaded, the virus, called Skulls, replaces all phone desktop icons with images of a skull. It also will render all phone applications, including SMSes and MMSes useless

Commwarrior: First worm to use MMS messages in order to spread to other devices. Can spread through Bluetooth as well. It infects devices running under OS Symbian Series 60. The executable worm file once launched hunts for accessible Bluetooth devices and sends the infected files under a random name to various devices.

Sony's Video Game Unit Buys Sucker Punch Studio

Sucker Punch, based in Bellevue, Washington, has 75 employees, according to Sony. The financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

The video game industry has been rife with consolidation in recent months. In July, Electronic Arts Inc said it was acquiring PopCap games, another company based in the Seattle area, in a deal worth up to $1.3 billion.
Sucker Punch's action adventure game, "inFamous 2," was the top selling software title in June, according to research firm NPD.

Sony was attracted to Sucker Punch because of its track record of making "high quality, profitable products over a long period of time," said Scott Rohde, senior vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios.

It is Sony Computer Entertainment's first major video game acquisition since it bought Media Molecule, the studio behind the game "Little Big Planet," in March 2010.

The team will remain in Seattle. Sony Computer Entertainment has 2,700 employees and 16 studios globally.
Sony said it already owns the rights to most of the company's intellectual property. Most of Sucker Punch's games are exclusive to Sony's PlayStation 3 home gaming console.

The video game industry has become more hits driven as budgets for top games have ballooned since the late 1990s, when top console games could be made for a couple of million dollars. In 2011, a top-selling game for a console might cost between $20 million and $40 million dollars.

As a part of Sony, the studio can now take more risks without worrying about its budget, said Sucker Punch managing partner Brian Fleming.

"When you're an independent little guy with one little project, with every game, you are risking your life and livelihood. This will help us creatively to be less inhibited," Fleming said.
Fleming declined to say what the studio's next project would be.

Sony shares listed in the United States closed at $25.07 on Monday.

Google's Chrome Overtakes Firefox In UK

Chrome, launched in December 2008, took 22.1 percent of the UK market, up from 12 percent a year earlier. Internet Explorer's share fell to 46 percent from 55 percent a year ago, while Firefox fell to 21.6 percent from 25.

Google is trying to convert its dominance in Web search into operating systems and mobile software, bringing it into direct competition with Microsoft. Chrome is used by more than 160 million users worldwide.

In May, Google launched its long-awaited Chromebook, which runs entirely on software accessed via the Internet rather than installed on the machine.

Globally, Internet Explorer had 42 percent of the browser market in July, followed by Firefox with 28 percent and Chrome with 22. Apple's Safari brower had 5 percent of the market, while Opera had 2 percent.

Samsung: Apple Agreement Not To Affect Tablet Sales Outside Australia

"Apple Inc filed a complaint with the Federal Court of Australia involving a Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 variant that Samsung Electronics had no plans of selling in Australia. No injunction was issued by the court and the parties in the case reached a mutual agreement which stipulates that the variant in question will not be sold in Australia," Samsung said in a in a statement on Tuesday.

Samsung is Apple's nearest rival in the fast-growing mobile device industry as it leverages its cost competitiveness and access to chips and other tablet components.

The legal battle between the two companies has been building since April when Apple sued Samsung in a U.S. federal court in California. Apple alleges the South Korean company's Galaxy line of mobile phones and tablets "slavishly" copies the iPhone and iPad. Samsung has counter sued Apple.

"A Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 for the Australian market will be released in the near future. This undertaking does not affect any other Samsung smartphone or tablet available in the Australian market or other countries," the Korean company said.

Google Chrome Is Third Most Popular Browser

Google Chrome is now the world's third most popular web browser with one in five users preferring it.

Google Chrome has also emerged as Britain's second most popular web browser, edging Mozilla's Firefox and nibbling at Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the current leader.

Chrome accounted for 22 percent of the British web market, compared to 45 percent of users preferring Internet Explorer. Apple's Safari stood at the fourth place with nine percent share.

But experts pointed out that Internet Explorer's market share was falling despite the programme already pre-installed on almost every computer sold in Britain, The Telegraph reports.

Google said its surge in popularity could be explained by its speed of delivery results, its security and a new ad campaign.

Lars Bak, the Google engineer responsible for Chrome, based in the Danish countryside, said the company's aim was speed. He said users should "never be happy" with the existing speed.

Apple Has More Cash Than US Government Today

As of today, Apple boss Steve Jobs is richer than Uncle Sam.

While the world's most powerful government has just $73.76 billion in its reserves, the world's top technology company has a neat cash pile of $75.87 billion on Thursday.

The US Treasury Department Thursday warned that it has now only this much operating budget as Republicans and Democrats fight over raising the nation's debt ceiling. With only that much reserve at its disposal, the Obama White House has warned the Republicans that the US government won't be able to meet its obligations as of Aug 2.

Facing a government default, Obama can definitely turn to Steve Jobs to give him a very brief breathing space.

The failure by the Republicans and Democrats to come to a compromise to raise the current $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug 2 could lead to a hike in interest rates. The already battered dollar may also plunge further.

With its market capitalisation of $363.25 billion, Apple is the second largest company on the planet after American oil giant Exxon Mobil. The Cupertino-based Apple started rising suddenly in 2007 when it entered the smart phone market with the launch of its first version of the iPhone.

Within three years, Apple went on to overhaul BlackBerry company Research In Motion (RIM) which invented the smart phone and dominated the market.

But its fortunes skyrocketed last year with the launch of the iPad tablet which has sold in millions. In fact, the iPhone and the iPad have made Apple the czar of mobile computing technology as rivals play up catch-up.

The stock of the company, which doesn't pay dividends, has now touched $400.

After Apple, another non-financial company sitting on a huge cash reserve is Microsoft whose own pile is about $40 billion.

    Why you Need a Blog

    What is a Blog?

It’s quite clear that if you want to make money on the Internet and want to increase the S.E.O. of your website then, without question, you absolutely, 1000%, NEED A BLOG!

blog noun 1. a website containing the writer’s or group of writers’ own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having images and links to other websites. verb 2. to maintain or add new entries to a blog.

77% of Internet users read blogs (you are reading ours right now!) and that, right there, is massive exposure for your website. Blogs have become absolutely indispensable to businesses in their quest for improved commerce and are a great way to provide your clients with information that bonds them to your business as blogs lets them see you as an authority on your subject and a friendly person they can contact. Usefully, they are a feature that you can easily add to your website.

    About Blog:

Blogs started as VERY simple online applications for posting online diaries. Those diaries were used as personal diaries, political activists, amateur news reporters, and for anyone that needed a soapbox. Today, that has all changed, and with this article I’ll show you some of the reasons why blogs need to be a necessary part of your online marketing (and all for just a little more than free).

You are sure to have heard about blogs on the Internet umpteen times and you are sure to have read them but do you know what they are? Do you know why they are so useful in selling your products and making yourself money?

A blog is a type of website where relatively short entries (almost like diary entries) are written in chronological order and displayed in reverse chronological order (i.e. your latest blog post sits at the top) like a news-feed. Blogs provide a commentary, information, news or your own thoughts and commentaries any particular subject (could be food, politics, sports or local news; absolutely anything you like). A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic and as such can be a rich and rewarding to read. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs and involves the visitor. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media… If you are an authority on a subject, whatever it is, you can blog about it!

Like many online tools and applications, blogs started out as a tool and a toy for geeks. If you look at email, forums, html, and now blogs, they were all used by geeks for some time before businesses found a way to monetize them. Blogs have fairly recently become the next online tool to become indispensable to businesses.

    The Benefits of Blogging:

    • You get increased sales of your product or service – If, let’s say, you were selling special Cat Food and Cat Toys, you get a chance to promote your products through your blog and talk about your experience with them.
    • You become known as an expert in your field – People will come to view you as an expert on Cat comforts and will take you advice with less hesitation.
    • Blogs get more traffic from search engines
    • They get traffic from next-generation social networking search engines (like Technorati.com)
    • News agencies are more likely to do a story on your business
    • Real-life stories and tips warm up your web presence and help your customer connect with a real person. – People will relate to your tales about your Cat and how you try to do the best you can for it … This makes you far more trustworthy. As your visitors relate to you more, they will spend more money with you.
    • Educating customers on how to be a better customer helps your business run better – Tell them to why to buy your products and tell them how to buy your products. The guidance of a human being is way better than the static instructions on your website.
    • You can update your blog on your own without your webmaster’s help – More time to spend blogging, more money to spend creating and marketing your products and “Mittens” doesn’t feel abandoned when you are meeting your webmaster…
    • Helps build communication between departments that are posting to the blog
     Uses for your Blog:
    • Create a how-to section – these tend to get attention from search engines
    • As a replacement for a static news article on your company home page
    • Warn customers of possible problems that they could have with products/services in your industry
    • Use the blog as an “ask the expert” section of your website
    • Tell customers about new products and services via your blog
    • Link to related articles and web content from your blog
Blogs are hard work to maintain and because they must be added to periodically so that the visitor feels they are getting the benefits.

The Secrets of Search Engine Optimization SEO

Search Engine Optimization, or S.E.O., is an important, and in fact vital, part of any business’s online presence. Put simply, S.E.O. is the “tweaking” of a website so that it’ll be displayed right at the top of a search engine’s results pages (y’know, on that first page of results you get on Google, Yahoo! or Bing etc. when you key in a search phrase or words and hit “Search”). This optimization is an important aspect of any kind of search engine marketing that you do; the ultimate aim being to achieving the highest ranking possible for your targeted keywords and phrases.

Basically, it works like this: When an Internet user runs a search using a search engine they’ll more than likely only look over the first page of results laid out before them. Typically, they’ll then either follow a link they found on that first page or they’ll have another go and try another search. They’d only very, very rarely make it as far as the barren wastelands of Page 3. What this means is, if your website is not among the first listed in the search results, its chances of being found by potential customers are actually quite slim. Basically, there is little point in making a website submission to search engines if your site will never appear in the first few pages of results. Sorry.

By taking the time to think about the writing, formatting, and organization of your website and making the appropriate adjustments for S.E.O. purposes, your website will become more “digestible” by search engines and will be ranked more favorably in their databases. The result is, with a little work (and it isn’t that much work that you gotta do), your site will be able to climb from the depths of search engine results Hell (page 2,569), right to the top of the list (page 1, yeah!). This search engine placement will be highly beneficial for any entity seeking a truly strong presence online.

The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of websites on the Internet are not optimized with the search engines in mind. The result here is that your competitors who DO posses well optimized sites will dominate the web traffic generated through the search engines. By optimizing your own site, you and your company can leapfrog the competition and direct traffic away from competitors and toward your own site. After the site is optimized it actually takes very little maintenance to keep your company’s ranking and the effect of the optimization can be seen immediately and for years to come.

Rule 1: Google doesn’t appreciate Shakespeare – people do
Search engines are exceptional consumers of content. They read everything on the Internet they can get their crawlers around. They’ve read every book in every language – twice (as well as several million books more worth of blog posts). Thing is, they don’t really understand it… They couldn’t tell you if the text and websites they read are any good from a critical standpoint. Google can tell you what a sentence or paragraph or article is roughly about without knowing whether it’s prolific in a profound sense or a plentiful one.
For the most part, a search engine such as Google will assign value to content according to the behavior of human readers – not according to some arbitrary algorithm that projects an entry’s staying power. If people like it, Google likes it. So certainly do your SEO copy writing for people.
You can optimize and optimize and optimize, hoping Google will reward your efforts with premium rankings, but if human readers don’t enjoy it, then neither will Google. How does Google know if people like it? By following the links…

Rule 2: Always write engaging content.

Rule 3: That’s already been written about 75 million times, but THAT hasn’t…
Everything (okay 99.9% of stuff) has been written about before at least once. The Internet is very much like The Simpsons where everything has been done before and yet there are still infinite questions left unanswered and there are countless arguments that haven’t been made. There are countless viewpoints that haven’t been introduced yet… As an S.E.O copywriter, it’s your job to find them.

You can get started by identifying the hot topics and trends in your industry – then take an angle on them that nobody else has really considered.

In addition to spotting these Internet trends, perform some critical analysis yourself. Do your due diligence. Search Google for specific industry-related questions. Which ones have no adequate answers? What information might prospective clients or customers want that’s so far been inaccessible to them? Don’t know what information they want and can’t find? Then ask them.

Then, once you’ve identified a fresh topic, write the optimized content for it.

Rule 4: My keyword density formula is WAY better than your keyword density formula
The question here is: What is optimized content? Is it content that follows an exact keyword density formula (so-many instances of a “keyword” per total number of words)? Should you incorporate keywords into every singe sentence? Every paragraph? I heard you’re supposed to infuse one keyword into every seventh sentence – is that even true?

Not really, no … It’s nonsense.

My own thoughts on keyword density are as follows: forget keywords and write naturally (as I emphasized in Rule 1). If your content is about a topic you hope to rank for, odds are you’ll use these keywords or phrases quite naturally. Injecting keywords where they don’t belong will only produce choppy and spammy content that neither Google nor your audience will appreciate. It’s a waste of time.

Furthermore, when it’s clear what your content is about, your readers will unwittingly know what keywords you want them to put in their anchor text links. If The Incredible Car Blog writes a blog about what cars will be like in 2020, odds are those linking to the post will put some variation of “2020 Cars” in the anchor text. And one link like that from a really reputable site is worth more than 1,000 instances of “2020 Cars” included in your original post.

So write honestly and eloquently, be informative and entertaining. One of the best ways to do that is to write something you’d want to read yourself. Don’t worry about optimization when you’re writing. Once you’ve completed the most engaging content in the world, that’s when you go back and optimize it.

Rule 5: The brutally honest secret to optimized content

Rule 6: Duplicate page titles confuse search engines
