Apple Has More Cash Than US Government Today

As of today, Apple boss Steve Jobs is richer than Uncle Sam.

While the world's most powerful government has just $73.76 billion in its reserves, the world's top technology company has a neat cash pile of $75.87 billion on Thursday.

The US Treasury Department Thursday warned that it has now only this much operating budget as Republicans and Democrats fight over raising the nation's debt ceiling. With only that much reserve at its disposal, the Obama White House has warned the Republicans that the US government won't be able to meet its obligations as of Aug 2.

Facing a government default, Obama can definitely turn to Steve Jobs to give him a very brief breathing space.

The failure by the Republicans and Democrats to come to a compromise to raise the current $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug 2 could lead to a hike in interest rates. The already battered dollar may also plunge further.

With its market capitalisation of $363.25 billion, Apple is the second largest company on the planet after American oil giant Exxon Mobil. The Cupertino-based Apple started rising suddenly in 2007 when it entered the smart phone market with the launch of its first version of the iPhone.

Within three years, Apple went on to overhaul BlackBerry company Research In Motion (RIM) which invented the smart phone and dominated the market.

But its fortunes skyrocketed last year with the launch of the iPad tablet which has sold in millions. In fact, the iPhone and the iPad have made Apple the czar of mobile computing technology as rivals play up catch-up.

The stock of the company, which doesn't pay dividends, has now touched $400.

After Apple, another non-financial company sitting on a huge cash reserve is Microsoft whose own pile is about $40 billion.

Why you Need a Blog

What is a Blog?

It’s quite clear that if you want to make money on the Internet and want to increase the S.E.O. of your website then, without question, you absolutely, 1000%, NEED A BLOG!

blog noun 1. a website containing the writer’s or group of writers’ own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having images and links to other websites. verb 2. to maintain or add new entries to a blog.

77% of Internet users read blogs (you are reading ours right now!) and that, right there, is massive exposure for your website. Blogs have become absolutely indispensable to businesses in their quest for improved commerce and are a great way to provide your clients with information that bonds them to your business as blogs lets them see you as an authority on your subject and a friendly person they can contact. Usefully, they are a feature that you can easily add to your website.

About Blog:

Blogs started as VERY simple online applications for posting online diaries. Those diaries were used as personal diaries, political activists, amateur news reporters, and for anyone that needed a soapbox. Today, that has all changed, and with this article I’ll show you some of the reasons why blogs need to be a necessary part of your online marketing (and all for just a little more than free).

You are sure to have heard about blogs on the Internet umpteen times and you are sure to have read them but do you know what they are? Do you know why they are so useful in selling your products and making yourself money?

A blog is a type of website where relatively short entries (almost like diary entries) are written in chronological order and displayed in reverse chronological order (i.e. your latest blog post sits at the top) like a news-feed. Blogs provide a commentary, information, news or your own thoughts and commentaries any particular subject (could be food, politics, sports or local news; absolutely anything you like). A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic and as such can be a rich and rewarding to read. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs and involves the visitor. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media… If you are an authority on a subject, whatever it is, you can blog about it!

Like many online tools and applications, blogs started out as a tool and a toy for geeks. If you look at email, forums, html, and now blogs, they were all used by geeks for some time before businesses found a way to monetize them. Blogs have fairly recently become the next online tool to become indispensable to businesses.

The Benefits of Blogging:

  • You get increased sales of your product or service – If, let’s say, you were selling special Cat Food and Cat Toys, you get a chance to promote your products through your blog and talk about your experience with them.
  • You become known as an expert in your field – People will come to view you as an expert on Cat comforts and will take you advice with less hesitation.
  • Blogs get more traffic from search engines
  • They get traffic from next-generation social networking search engines (like Technorati.com)
  • News agencies are more likely to do a story on your business
  • Real-life stories and tips warm up your web presence and help your customer connect with a real person. – People will relate to your tales about your Cat and how you try to do the best you can for it … This makes you far more trustworthy. As your visitors relate to you more, they will spend more money with you.
  • Educating customers on how to be a better customer helps your business run better – Tell them to why to buy your products and tell them how to buy your products. The guidance of a human being is way better than the static instructions on your website.
  • You can update your blog on your own without your webmaster’s help – More time to spend blogging, more money to spend creating and marketing your products and “Mittens” doesn’t feel abandoned when you are meeting your webmaster…
  • Helps build communication between departments that are posting to the blog
 Uses for your Blog:
  • Create a how-to section – these tend to get attention from search engines
  • As a replacement for a static news article on your company home page
  • Warn customers of possible problems that they could have with products/services in your industry
  • Use the blog as an “ask the expert” section of your website
  • Tell customers about new products and services via your blog
  • Link to related articles and web content from your blog
Blogs are hard work to maintain and because they must be added to periodically so that the visitor feels they are getting the benefits.

The Secrets of Search Engine Optimization SEO

Search Engine Optimization, or S.E.O., is an important, and in fact vital, part of any business’s online presence. Put simply, S.E.O. is the “tweaking” of a website so that it’ll be displayed right at the top of a search engine’s results pages (y’know, on that first page of results you get on Google, Yahoo! or Bing etc. when you key in a search phrase or words and hit “Search”). This optimization is an important aspect of any kind of search engine marketing that you do; the ultimate aim being to achieving the highest ranking possible for your targeted keywords and phrases.

Basically, it works like this: When an Internet user runs a search using a search engine they’ll more than likely only look over the first page of results laid out before them. Typically, they’ll then either follow a link they found on that first page or they’ll have another go and try another search. They’d only very, very rarely make it as far as the barren wastelands of Page 3. What this means is, if your website is not among the first listed in the search results, its chances of being found by potential customers are actually quite slim. Basically, there is little point in making a website submission to search engines if your site will never appear in the first few pages of results. Sorry.

By taking the time to think about the writing, formatting, and organization of your website and making the appropriate adjustments for S.E.O. purposes, your website will become more “digestible” by search engines and will be ranked more favorably in their databases. The result is, with a little work (and it isn’t that much work that you gotta do), your site will be able to climb from the depths of search engine results Hell (page 2,569), right to the top of the list (page 1, yeah!). This search engine placement will be highly beneficial for any entity seeking a truly strong presence online.

The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of websites on the Internet are not optimized with the search engines in mind. The result here is that your competitors who DO posses well optimized sites will dominate the web traffic generated through the search engines. By optimizing your own site, you and your company can leapfrog the competition and direct traffic away from competitors and toward your own site. After the site is optimized it actually takes very little maintenance to keep your company’s ranking and the effect of the optimization can be seen immediately and for years to come.

Rule 1: Google doesn’t appreciate Shakespeare – people do
Search engines are exceptional consumers of content. They read everything on the Internet they can get their crawlers around. They’ve read every book in every language – twice (as well as several million books more worth of blog posts). Thing is, they don’t really understand it… They couldn’t tell you if the text and websites they read are any good from a critical standpoint. Google can tell you what a sentence or paragraph or article is roughly about without knowing whether it’s prolific in a profound sense or a plentiful one.
For the most part, a search engine such as Google will assign value to content according to the behavior of human readers – not according to some arbitrary algorithm that projects an entry’s staying power. If people like it, Google likes it. So certainly do your SEO copy writing for people.
You can optimize and optimize and optimize, hoping Google will reward your efforts with premium rankings, but if human readers don’t enjoy it, then neither will Google. How does Google know if people like it? By following the links…

Rule 2: Always write engaging content.

Rule 3: That’s already been written about 75 million times, but THAT hasn’t…
Everything (okay 99.9% of stuff) has been written about before at least once. The Internet is very much like The Simpsons where everything has been done before and yet there are still infinite questions left unanswered and there are countless arguments that haven’t been made. There are countless viewpoints that haven’t been introduced yet… As an S.E.O copywriter, it’s your job to find them.

You can get started by identifying the hot topics and trends in your industry – then take an angle on them that nobody else has really considered.

In addition to spotting these Internet trends, perform some critical analysis yourself. Do your due diligence. Search Google for specific industry-related questions. Which ones have no adequate answers? What information might prospective clients or customers want that’s so far been inaccessible to them? Don’t know what information they want and can’t find? Then ask them.

Then, once you’ve identified a fresh topic, write the optimized content for it.

Rule 4: My keyword density formula is WAY better than your keyword density formula
The question here is: What is optimized content? Is it content that follows an exact keyword density formula (so-many instances of a “keyword” per total number of words)? Should you incorporate keywords into every singe sentence? Every paragraph? I heard you’re supposed to infuse one keyword into every seventh sentence – is that even true?

Not really, no … It’s nonsense.

My own thoughts on keyword density are as follows: forget keywords and write naturally (as I emphasized in Rule 1). If your content is about a topic you hope to rank for, odds are you’ll use these keywords or phrases quite naturally. Injecting keywords where they don’t belong will only produce choppy and spammy content that neither Google nor your audience will appreciate. It’s a waste of time.

Furthermore, when it’s clear what your content is about, your readers will unwittingly know what keywords you want them to put in their anchor text links. If The Incredible Car Blog writes a blog about what cars will be like in 2020, odds are those linking to the post will put some variation of “2020 Cars” in the anchor text. And one link like that from a really reputable site is worth more than 1,000 instances of “2020 Cars” included in your original post.

So write honestly and eloquently, be informative and entertaining. One of the best ways to do that is to write something you’d want to read yourself. Don’t worry about optimization when you’re writing. Once you’ve completed the most engaging content in the world, that’s when you go back and optimize it.

Rule 5: The brutally honest secret to optimized content

Rule 6: Duplicate page titles confuse search engines

Three blasts in Mumbai; 17 dead, 131 injured

Serial blasts struck Mumbai Wednesday evening, less than three years after the 26/11 terrorist attacks of 2008. The three blasts, in sequence, were timed at 6.30 pm, 6.45 pm, and 7 pm IST, and targeted in that order Zaveri Bazaar, Opera House and the Kabutarkhana area of Dadar West. Zaveri Bazaar, centre of the jewellery industry, is adjacent the iconic Mumbadevi temple from which the city derives its name; both Zaveri Bazaar and Kabutarkhana were also targeted in the 1993 serial blasts.Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday described Wednesday's three serial explosions Mumbai as unfortunate and warned that every city of India was vulnerable to coordinated attacks by terrorists.

Security agencies have identified the owner of the two-wheeler in which the explosive material was planted at Zaveri Bazar in Mumbai even as as cyber experts are looking into an email which may have some cross-border links.

Union home secretary R K Singh said investigations into the serial blasts in the metropolis were going on and several people were being questioned based on their "previous known linkages".
"This investigation is on. We have identified the scooter in which one of the bombs was planted," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

India Lose Two Rating Points Despite Series-Win

Despite a draw in the final Test against the West Indies that sealed India's 1-0 series win at the Caribbeans, the visitors have lost two rating points in the ICC Test Rankings for teams.

While MS Dhoni opted to play out a draw instead of going for what many considered an easy win on the final day of the last Test on Sunday, India did manage to stay at the top-spot of the rankings despite losing points. In fact the draw gave West Indies two rating points although Darren Sammy's side did not jump places and are now just two points behind Pakistan, on the seventh position.

As per the latest rankings released by the International Cricket Council, India continue to dominate the Test rankings with 126 points, ahead of South Africa (117 points) and England (116 points).

Sachin On Maken's Mind For Bharat Ratna

A day after reports emerged that Sports Minister Ajay Maken has written to the Home Ministry asking it to consider including sportspersons in the list of Bharat Ratna awardees, it is clear that Sachin Tendulkar is on his priority list for the honour.

In an exclusive chat with NDTV, Maken, when asked in a rapid fire round about what comes to his mind when he thinks of Bharat Ratna, the master-blasters name came the prompt reply.

While fans, players and eminent sports personalities have already expressed their opinion supporting the highest civilian award for Tendulkar, the Sports Minister's opinion is sure to hasten the process of including sportspersons in the gambit of personalities awarded with the Bharat Ratna, which is currently reserved for artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, as well as "recognition of public service of the highest order.

Two Major Train Accidents Kalka Mail & Puri Guwahati Exp. , Is Anybody In Charge?

Minister of State for Railways, Mukul Roy did not visit either Fatehpur, where the Kalka Mail derailed, killing at least 69 people or Rangiya where the Puri Guwahati Express went off the rails because of a blast. Mr Roy denied receiving any orders from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to rush to Rangiya, though sources claimed the PMO had conveyed the orders to him to go.

So why did Mr Roy stay aloof from the twin disasters?

The Minister says the Prime Minister sent another Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa to Uttar Pradesh and the situation in Assam is under control. But sources say he kept a distance because he knew his party colleague Dinesh Trivedi was the top contender for the Railway Minister's job in the Cabinet reshuffle that is imminent. And, that, of course, is a matter of pulls and pressures within the Trinamool.

But the Opposition blames Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for for bowing to pressures of coalition politics and not allotting the Railway Minister's post to anyone for almost 2 months.

"The BJP also is saddened by the plight of the Rail ministry; it is like an orphan now. Look at the PM's weakness; Mamata moved the Railway Board to Kolkata; he never interfered in these matters where as Railways are the largest public sector in the nation.  When the PM says it is the compulsion of coalition politics, is the compulsion such that people lose lives? " BJP's JP Nanda said.

The Left parties have also slammed the Prime Minister. The CPM politburo has issued a statement saying, "...the Railways have been on a disastrous path under Mamata Banerjee.  It has suffered acute neglect and was used for the political ends of the Minister in West Bengal. More than one lakh safety related jobs are lying vacant."

The Congress tried to defend itself. The party's national spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, " Don't accidents happen when ministers are there?"

But with over 100 lives lost in three major train accidents in the last six days, safety seems to have fallen off the Railways' radar, and no one is willing to take the responsibility.

Patents War: After Apple vs Samsung, It's Apple vs HTC

Fresh from a patent battle with Samsung, Apple has now smacked a complaint against HTC at the International Trade Commission (ITC) for patent infringement. This the second time in six months that Apple has filed a complaint against HTC at the ITC.

In a predictable move, Apple has made demands to block the import of HTC devices in the US. Previously, Apple made similar demands with regard to patents infringed by Samsung.

Engadget reports that a judge is expected to rule on August 5 and all findings till then will be reviewed by the ITC.

Infosys Q1: Muted guidance spooks stock

India's No. 2 software services exporter, reported a 15.4 per cent rise in fiscal first-quarter profit, narrowly missing expectations as a surge in wages offset strong demand from western clients.

Bangalore-based Infosys, also listed on the Nasdaq, said consolidated net profit rose to Rs 17.2 billion ($387 million), from Rs 14.9 billion a year earlier.

A Reuters poll of brokerages had forecast a profit of Rs 17.29 billion for the company, which countsGoldman Sachs, BT Group and BP among its main clients.

India's $60 billion showpiece IT sector is enjoying solid growth from improved pricing for its services and increased outsourcing by companies looking to cut costs and boost efficiency amid growing economic uncertainty.

Shares in Infosys, valued at more than $38 billion, have fallen 15.2 per cent this year, compared with an 11.7 per cent drop in the sector index and a 8.5 per cent fall in the Mumbai index.

PlayStation 3 Successor Launching In 2012

Citing "Taiwan-based component makers," DigiTimes says production on the console will start at the end of this year. However, the component makers did not say exactly when next year the device might launch.

Though DigiTimes' sources call Sony's next console the PlayStation 4, it's important to note that the company has yet to even announce its next console, let alone name it.

DigiTimes didn't report on the device's graphical capabilities, but the publication's sources said the console will boast a Kinect-like feature, allowing users to play games with only the movement of their bodies.

The DigiTimes report comes just a few months after game blog Kotaku cited its own sources saying that neither Sony nor Microsoft were planning to launch follow-ups to their current consoles until 2014. So far, however, neither company has said for sure when they might release new hardware.

If Sony does release a new console next year, it won't be alone. Earlier this year, Nintendo unveiled plans to release its follow-up to the Wii, called Wii U. The device promises better graphical capabilities and a new controller that boasts a 6.2-inch touch screen. Nintendo hasn't said exactly when the Wii U will hit store shelves next year or how much it will cost.

If DigiTimes' sources are correct, Sony has high hopes for its next console. In 2012 alone, according to the publication's sources, Sony expects to ship 20 million units.

Atlantis Launch A Bittersweet End For Space Shuttle

For tens of thousands of past and present shuttle workers, including more than 3,000 expecting layoffs July 22, the traditional "wheels stopped" call when the space shuttle Atlantis returns to Earth will signal the end of an era.

Atlantis is scheduled to take off at 11:26 a.m. ET today, weather permitting, on NASA's final shuttle mission after three decades and more than 130 flights, with a landing at the Kennedy Space Center set for July 20.

"After the wheels have stopped and the displays go blank and the orbiter is unpowered for the final time...there will be a rush of emotion when we all finally realize that's it, that it's all over, the crowning jewel of our space program, the way we got back and forth from low-Earth orbit for 30 years...we'll realize that's all over," said shuttle commander Christopher Ferguson. "That's going to take a little while to deal with it."

Atlantis' landing will come seven-and-a-half years after President Bush, responding to the 2003 Columbia disaster, ordered NASA to complete the International Space Station and retire the space shuttle fleet by the end of the decade.

When all was said and done, the final two shuttle missions slipped into the first half of 2011 and a third flight, with Atlantis, was added to the manifest to deliver a final load of supplies to the space station.

The Bush administration's plan was to eliminate the costly shuttle program--and the thousands of contractor jobs that made it so expensive--and use the savings to help pay for a new program, building safer, lower-cost rockets needed to support the establishment of Antarctica-style bases on the moon by around 2020.

Amazon Wins Skirmish In 'App Store' Battle With Apple

Apple has been dealt a blow in its "App Store" trademark case, with a federal judge denying its request for an injunction to stop Amazon from using the term.

Apple filed a lawsuit against Amazon in March, saying that it has used the term "App Store" since 2008 and applied for a trademark at that time. Apple argued that Amazon's "Appstore," an Android marketplace that launched in March, infringes on the trademark and is confusing to customers.

Amazon fired back, saying the mark is generic and therefore not protectable -- and even if it weren't generic, Apple "cannot demonstrate any likelihood of confusion."

Judge Phyllis Hamilton mostly sided with Amazon in her ruling on Wednesday in California district court, in which she denied Apple the injunction it sought. Hamilton wrote that she "does not agree with Amazon that the mark is purely generic," but also said that "there appears to be no need for a leap of imagination to understand what the term means."

Apple failed to prove its main points, she said, including: that Amazon's "Appstore" name will confuse customers, that it infringes on Apple and that it dilutes Apple's brand.

In a twist of the knife, Hamilton seemed to imply that Apple could have won the case if it had better protected the phrase in question.

"Apple did have substantially exclusive use of 'App Store' when it launched its service a little over three years ago, but the term appears to have been used more widely by other companies as time has passed," she wrote.
Apple spokewoman Kristin Huguet pointed back to an earlier company statement on the case: "We asked Amazon not to copy the 'App Store' name because it will confuse and mislead customers," she said.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple announced Wednesday that more than 15 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store.

Facebook Readies A Blitz Of New Products

Elmer Fudd has "Wabbit Season," and Mark Zuckerberg has just kicked off "Launching Season."
Facebook is readying a slew of new products to debut soon, said Zuckerberg, the company's CEO, at a news conference here on Wednesday. Programmers have been toiling away this year on several major projects in anticipation of this acceleration period.

"We've been busy building stuff for the past six months or so, and today marks the beginning of what we'll call Launching Season 2011," Zuckerberg said. "Over the next coming weeks and months, we just have a lot of fun stuff to roll out."
The starting gun for this stage of frequent product updates sounded at Wednesday's event, which served as a launch pad for new messaging tools. People will be able to make video calls on Facebook's site, thanks to a partnership with Skype, and create impromptu chat rooms.

To keep the new features rolling in anticipation of a launching season, Facebook sets tight deadlines on development teams. Facebook software engineers often find themselves working nights and weekends during these periods.
They aren't directly asked to work after-hours, Facebook spokeswoman Meredith Chin wrote in an e-mail. "But people do work to get things out the door as fast as possible," she wrote.

Last fall was very busy for Facebook. The company convened reporters for three news conferences during a four-week span in October and November.
The release cycle began ramping up in August last year, for the f8 developers conference. Facebook plans to hold another one this year, though it hasn't set a date yet, Chin said.
Facebook teams "went into lockdown mode" in June, "when the engineers basically had to work weekends through summer," said Ray Valdes, an Internet analyst for Gartner Research.

"They work furiously in spring and early summer, and release in the end of summer, early fall," Valdes said. "There must be some internal clock."
While the clock isn't tuned precisely to last year's ticker, Zuckerberg's acknowledgement of the practice could suggest a new trend for the fledgling company.
Many tech giants operate in cycles. Apple, for example, has gotten into the habit of releasing new iPads in the spring, iPhones in the summer and iPods in the fall. (Apple appears to be breaking with tradition this year, however, as it's expected to debut a new iPhone in the fall.)

In the tech industry, companies "are always looking for the right moment" to unleash their products, said Susan Etlinger, an analyst for consulting firm Altimeter Group. Facebook may be settling into a groove.
That Facebook is defining a product strategy, with an emphasis on improving the service, rather than on simply signing up additional members, shows maturity, Etlinger said. The timing is right because the site may be nearing a saturation point, with 750 million active users.

"Facebook should be hyperaware, and I think they are aware of how their business is shifting," Etlinger said.
As part of Facebook's recent growth spurt, the company has hired developers to specialize in coding computer software. Facebook also seems poised to release an iPad application in the next few weeks, according to a report in The New York Times.

Other projects in the works include a revamped Web-based version of Facebook for smartphones, which will let third-party developers easily shrink their Facebook apps and run them on a phone, as well as a sleek app for sharing photos, according to reports from the blog TechCrunch. Mobile is an important area where Facebook can grow, Zuckerberg and analysts agree.

As Google tries to gain a toehold in social networking with Google+ and Myspace operates under a new corporate parent, Facebook is amassing an arsenal of features to unleash in the next few months.
Zuckerberg seems confident that he has ample ammunition to fend off the competition, but is there a Buggs Bunny lying in wait?
