Mozilla Offers Olive Branch To Firefox Business Users

Mozilla today did its best impression of a mea culpa in response to the corporate backlash following recent comments that the company doesn't care about its enterprise customers.

In a blog post today, Mozilla tried to justify its recent fast-paced upgrade cycle by saying that such updates help secure users and provide a richer Web experience. The company once again explained that its focus has been on the individual user but admitted that Firefox has carved out a niche in the corporate world.

Mozilla also acknowledged the challenge for corporate IT, which has to test and certify their Web sites and Web-based apps whenever a new version of Firefox is released, a process that can take weeks or months.
While not yet totally embracing the enterprise, the company made it clear that it's now looking at ways to better help IT staffers who have faithfully adopted Firefox but have been thrown by the constant upgrades.

"We are exploring solutions that balance these needs, with active discussion in our community, including valuable input from IBM," Mozilla said on its blog. "Open source software is well-suited to these challenges, as interested parties can come together to build what is needed."

Mozilla recently released Firefox 5 only three months after Firefox 4 made its debut and announced that it would be cutting off support for version 4. That move threw IT departments and companies, which were unprepared for such a quick-change act.

Following complaints and criticism from the business world, Mozilla's Asa Dotzler fired back that enterprise has never been and shouldn't be a focus of the company. Mozilla has argued that it can't gear Firefox toward and offer support for both individuals and business customers. Of course, that and other comments combined with the quick upgrade cycle fueled the flames further.

The backlash gave Microsoft an opportunity to swoop in and declare Internet Explorer as the browser for all customers, including those in the enterprise arena. In a blog posted yesterday, Dean Hachamovitch, corporate vice president for IE, explained the upgrade process and tools that Microsoft makes available for its browser. He also touted the notion that unlike Mozilla, Microsoft can support both individuals and businesses that use IE.

"Making the Web better for large organizations (with managed IT) is just as important as making the Web better for consumers and developers," wrote Hachamovitch".

Mozilla's pledge that it will try to better help the corporate world seems to have come about through a nudge from a major corporate customer: IBM. Big Blue last year chose Firefox as its default browser. Although Mozilla didn't explain what "valuable input" it received from IBM, Big Blue clearly has a vested interest in making sure its more than 400,000 employees who rely on Firefox continue to be supported.

Google's Swiffy Makes Flash files HTML5-friendly

A new tool from Google Labs called Swiffy is taking aim at Flash files on the Web by offering a tool that can convert them to HTML5 for use on devices without Flash capabilities.

Flash authors who come to Google with their SWF files can run it through the Swiffy converter, which splits it into a JSON file, then renders it with HTML, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). As a result of the process, Google says the converted files have rendering performance that's "quite good," with a file size that's "slightly larger" than the original.

Google's tool joins Wallaby, a similar effort from Adobe, which debuted earlier this year. It turns FLA-formatted files into HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. That tool was initially designed as a way for developers to develop and port ads for iPhones, iPads, iPod touches, and any other devices without Flash capabilities.

In an FAQ about Swiffy, Google says Flash owner Adobe is "pleased to see the Flash platform extend to devices which don't support the Flash player," and that the two companies "look forward to close collaboration around efforts like these."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs famously penned a missive entitled "Thoughts of Flash" last year, noting that the company had no intentions of including the software as part of iOS. "Flash was created during the PC era--for PCs and mice," Jobs said in that letter. "New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind."

Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch later responded by pledging to make "the best tools in the world for HTML5." So far that's been releasing an HTML5 update to its Dreamweaver Web site creation tool, introducing CSS Regions to the WebKit browser engine project, and rolling out a tool called Edge that lets designers make animated Web page elements with standard Web technologies.

Google says it's still deciding whether or not to make Swiffy an open-source project. In the interim, it remains in the company's Labs.

No Money Siphoned, Claims Sai Trust

With questions being raised over its activities, the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust today said the over Rs. 35 lakh seized recently was money given by a devotee for a consultant tasked with the construction of a memorial for Sai Baba.

Refuting any wrongdoings, it said financial transparency is being strictly followed while running the body.

Trustee V Srinivasan, addressing a press conference here, said the trust has filed all statutory returns and donations received from devotees have been duly deposited to banks in a transparent manner.

He said the trust has already paid Rs. 9.75 crore as income tax without any demand by the concerned authorities and decided to pay necessary tax on all its inventories.

On the seizure of over Rs. 35 lakh in cash from a vehicle in Puttaparthi town, he said the trust had appointed a consultant for construction of a "Maha Samadhi" as a memorial for Sathya Sai Baba and the amount offered by a devotee was handed over to the consultant for the project.

"The trust has no connection with it. The cash was not recovered from any trustee. The vehicle from which the money was recovered does not belong to the trust," Srinivasan said.

He said the consultant has already explained to the police that the money was given for the Maha Samadhi project.

"Since the trust is not going to implement the project, the money was handed over to the project consultant.

All information sought by police are being given," he said.

With CRPF keeping strict vigil, a cavalcade of 73 vehicles carrying the pilgrims was flagged off by minister for tourism and culture Nawang Rigzin Jora from Amarnath basecamp at Bagwatinagar Yatri Niwas here around 5:00am.

The devotees offered prayers and chanted Lord Shiva slogans like "Bum Bum Bolay, Chalo Amarnath, Chalo Eik Saath" at the event.

1,369 men, 421 women, 110 children and 196 Sadhus left in 49 buses and 24 Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) for Pahalgam and Baltal base camps in Kashmir valley and their onward journey to the shrine.

Obama To Speak On Afghanistan Troop Withdrawal This Week

President Barack Obama will give a speech on the Afghanistan troop drawdown on Wednesday, a senior administration official said Monday.
The news came hours after White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters that Obama had yet to make a final decision on the size and scope of the troop withdrawal, but would do so "soon."
"The president is still in a process of finalizing his decision on the pace and scope of the drawdown that will begin in July of 2011," Carney said Monday afternoon. "He's finalizing his decision. He's reviewing the options and the assessments and will have an announcement to make soon."
An estimated 100,000 U.S. troops are serving in Afghanistan, some 30,000 of which are part of the so-called surge ordered in late 2009 in a bid to control the rising violence.
Obama has said those troops would begin coming home in July, and he recently indicated the number would be "significant."
It was not clear then what the president considered significant. White House officials have not elaborated.
The president has repeatedly said he is confident the United States can meet the self-imposed deadline to begin bringing U.S. troops back from Afghanistan without compromising Afghan security, though military commanders and government officials have raised concern about the readiness of Afghan security forces.

China's Floods Kill At Least 742 People,& more than 1.6 million evacuated, Heavy Rains Continue

China has been experiencing the worst of floods in decades. They're continuing to wreak havoc in China's southern Sichuan province and northwestern Shaanxi province. Here's more.

Heavy rains, flooding and disasters have killed at least 742 people and left hundreds more missing this year across much of China, state-run media reported on Monday.

Rains have affected nearly 36 million people and more than one million have been relocated.

Floods and landslides have killed dozens more people in recent days and forced the evacuation of another 12,000 people in western and central China.

In Jiange County of Sichuan Province, floodwaters washed through villages, submerging houses and streets.

In Shaanxi Province, heavy rains caused rivers to swell and damaged scores of buildings.

More than a hundred people have been killed and 167 people have been reported missing in the province in the past two weeks. Some 700,000 people had to be evacuated.

A stretch of the Hanjiang River at Hanzhong City reached its highest point so far this year.

Flooding on the Yangtze River at the Three Gorges Dam reached its highest water level since 1987 on Friday.

Experts warn the water level could rise even higher.

Although floods are common in China during the wet season, floods this year have been the worst in decades.

More rain has been forecast for regions in central and southwest China in the coming days.

Cocaine Addiction Linked To Brain Abnormalities

Scientists have found "significant abnormalities" in the brains of people addicted to cocaine, which could help explain some of the compulsive behaviour associated with using the drug. It may also hint at why some people are more prone to addiction.
Brain scans revealed that cocaine users had a "dramatic decrease in grey matter" in their frontal lobes, according to researchers, which affected key functions including decision-making, memory and attention, while some of their brain's rewards systems were significantly bigger. Karen Ersche of the Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute at the University of Cambridge, who led the latest work, found the longer a person had been using cocaine, the poorer their attention was, and the more compulsively they used the drug.
"That is the hallmark of cocaine dependence - namely, that most of them are intelligent people who go to great extents to buy cocaine, to get more cocaine, to put their jobs at risk, their families at risk,They feel like they're driven to use more" said Ersche.
The results were published on Tuesday in the journal Brain. Ersche and her team scanned the brains of 60 people who were dependent on cocaine and compared them to scans of 60 people without any history of drug-taking. "We found significant abnormalities in the brains of the cocaine users," she said.
Specifically, the amount of grey matter in the orbitofrontal cortex was reduced in people with cocaine addiction, an area involved in decision-making and goal-directed behaviour.
Other affected areas included the insula, an area of the brain involved in feedback processing, learning and feelings of cravings. The grey matter in the anterior cingulate, involved in emotional processing and being attentive, was also reduced.
In contrast, a region deep in the brain associated with reward processing, attention and motor movements - the chordate nucleus - was enlarged in subjects who were addicted to the drug. This could explain why those subjects were more prone to addiction but the scientists cannot be sure whether the enlargement is a result of cocaine use.
Laurence John Reed, a clinical senior lecturer in addiction neurobiology at Imperial College London, said the "most impressive" results were the basic comparison of controls and stimulant users, which showed how parts of the brain remodel themselves in response to drugs. "This is a striking and visual example of how addictive stimulant use can result in adaptation of very important brain systems which have a direct correlates with behaviour – specifically inattention, impulsivity and compulsivity – and really does underline why we need a much better neurobiological understanding of the processes involved."
Ersche said that, though she found links between brain structure and cocaine use,her research was not conclusive on which came first. "At the moment, correlation shows me a direct relationship - but I don't know which direction the relationship is. Has this been caused by cocaine, or are people who have this abnormality more vulnerable?"
But the work could be used to help in diagnosis and treatment of addiction.
"We basically show that cocaine is a disorder of the brain, which is a big step," said Ersche. "For a lot of people, it is still a moral issue and willpower has nothing to do with the brain."
Knowing that certain brain areas are abnormal, she said, meant that scientists could try to work out ways of training or medicating the brain to get around the damage.
In a separate study published in the journal Heart, scientists at the Foundation CNR-Tuscan Region in Pisa, Italy, found that heavy cocaine use also causes serious damage to the heart, without any obvious symptoms at the early stages. Scans of the hearts of 25 men with long-term history of cocaine use picked up structural damage in 83% of participants and swelling in the lower left ventricle in around 47%. They also found tissue scarring in 73% of addicts, possibly a result of undetected heart attacks.
Around one in five cocaine addicts suffer from an inflammation of heart muscle, known as myocarditis, and the researchers said that a quarter of non-fatal heart attacks among the under-45s are associated with cocaine.

PHILIPPINES: Flood-hit Mindanao battles water lilies

COTABATO CITY, 20 June 2011 (IRIN) - Armed with machetes and cutting equipment, and in a bid to prevent flooding in and around the Philippine city of Cotabato on Mindanao island, hundreds of troops and civilians cleared tons of water lilies from the Rio Grande river on 18-19 June.

The innocuous-looking plants are the prime culprits of recent flooding in and around this city of 400,000, according to local officials.

“This is the worst I have ever seen it,” Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, who chairs the Presidential Task Force on the Mindanao River Basin, told IRIN. “This happened two years ago, but never like this.”

Dislodged by weeks of heavy rain in their natural habitat, the plants had at one point blocked up to 2km of the river, the longest in Mindanao and the second largest in the Philippines, he said.

As of 20 June, some 25,000 families in the city had been affected. Of these 8,000 were staying in temporary shelters, mostly schools, with some 17,000 remaining at home, local authorities said.

Heavy rain in eastern Mindanao in recent weeks caused the river to burst its banks, leaving parts of 33 of Cotabato City’s 37 low-lying villages inundated.

Thousands of children were forced out of school, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported, as water levels in some parts of the city rose to 0.7 metres.

Meanwhile, in nearby Maguindanao and North Cotabato provinces, the government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) reported another 30,000 families affected, many of whom remained in their homes, unwilling to abandon their possessions: In one house IRIN visited some family members were perched on a table watching TV as knee-deep water swirled below them.

Dislodged

According to officials, the river level began rising when about eight hectares of water hyacinth were dislodged from Liguasan Marsh - an extensive 288,000-hectare swamp region in central Mindanao - following weeks of heavy rain and the emergency release of water from the NAPOCOR (National Power Corporation) dam upstream from the marsh.

China Building World’s Biggest Radio Telescope

Since its completion in 1963, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, with a diameter of 305 m (1,000 ft) and a collecting area of 73,000 square meters (790,000 sq ft), has been the largest single-aperture radio telescope ever constructed. But Arecibo is set to lose its title with construction now underway in Guizhou Province in southern China of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Upon its expected completion in 2016, FAST will be able to see more than three times further into space and survey the skies ten times faster than Arecibo.

FAST was first proposed by China for the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), which has since opted to combine the signals of thousands of smaller antennae spread over a distance of more than 3,000 km (1,864 miles), combining for a total collecting area of approximately one square kilometer (0.38 square miles). The SKA will be built in the southern hemisphere with South Africa and Australia currently vying for the right to host the project.

Despite this, an international review and advisory conference on the science and technology of FAST held in Beijing in 2006 concluded FAST was feasible. In the following year funding for FAST was given the green light and the approved budget now sits at CNY700 million (approx. US$107.9 million). Construction in the Dawodang depression in south Guizhou commenced in March.

Unlike Arecibo, which has a fixed spherical curvature focusing radio waves into a line above the dish where they are focused to a single point by more mirrors, FAST's cable-net supporting structure will be able to deform the surface in real time through active control. As PopSci explains, this will allow a subset dish's 4,400 triangular aluminum panels to form a parabolic mirror anywhere within the larger bowl that is nearly the size of the entire Arecibo dish.

Using FAST's unparalleled sensitivity and high surveying speed, the project is expected to enable the surveying of neutral hydrogen in the Milky Way and other galaxies, the detection of new pulsars (both galactic and extragalactic), the search for the first shining stars, and of perhaps most interest to many people, the search for extraterrestrial life. It is expected to be able to detect transmissions from over 1,000 light years away.

With a construction period of 5.5 years, FAST is due to be completed in 2016.

Nokia's Windows Phone

It should be not too shocking that Nokia will produce numerous styled devices for Windows Phones--after all, they're quite creative over there. So the rumor that one of Nokia's first devices will feature a full QWERTY keyboard should not be too much a surprise.
According to Shiny-shiny, who were at a Nokia event yesterday, a rep for the company was a little loose lipped on some details about their foray into Windows Phones:
"...expect a Blackberry-rivaling QWERTY phone in that line-up of phones out this year. Nokia have a A rep said that Nokia wanted to cater to the business market, that Windows Phone was a natural choice for the business user and that business users wanted QWERTY keyboards. I'm taking that as "yes we are releasing a QWERTY phone in our 2011 line-up"."
Sounds plausible. Then again, we're expecting a bit of everything from these guys, so it's just a matter of time anyways. Regarding the release date, nothing too new their either, but like Mango, things look to be ahead of schedule:
"The official release date for the phones is quarter 4 - the last three months of the year - but given that there was a Nokia Windows phone floating around at a Nokia event last night (apparently), I suspect we'll be seeing one sometime round the beginning of that period - September."
Yup, we imagine we could "see" a device in September with a release in October/November. Remember, Nokia has said they won't show the phone till it's close to its final release date. We just know that the next six months should be very exciting.

Microsoft Releases Kinect for Windows SDK Beta

Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of Kinect™ for Windows® Software Development Kit (SDK) from Microsoft Research, a free beta release for noncommercial applications. The SDK is designed to empower a growing community of developers, academic researchers and enthusiasts to create new experiences that include depth sensing, human motion tracking, and voice and object recognition using Kinect technology on Windows 7. The Kinect for Windows SDK can be downloaded today at no cost for development of noncommercial applications at http://research.microsoft.com/kinectsdk.

To celebrate the release, Microsoft invited a select group of developers to the Microsoft campus in Redmond, challenging them to test the limits of their imaginations using the SDK in a Channel 9 Live 24-hour coding marathon (aka “Code Camp”). Working with the new toolkit and a vast array of hardware, developers are expected to build concept applications across a diverse range of scenarios, including, potentially, healthcare, science and education. Projects from Code Camp will be shown in a live broadcast on Channel 9 today from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. PDT, and highlights can be found on the Microsoft News Center at http://channel9.msdn.com/live.

“The Kinect for Windows SDK opens up a world of possibilities to developers who want to unleash the power of Kinect technology on Windows,” said Anoop Gupta, distinguished scientist, Microsoft Research. “We can’t wait to see what this community will create as we work together to build more natural, intuitive computing experiences.”

The Kinect for Windows SDK, which works with Windows 7, includes drivers, rich APIs for Raw Sensor Streams, natural user interfaces, installer documents and resource materials. The SDK provides Kinect capabilities to developers building applications with C++, C# or Visual Basic® using Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2010.

Features of the SDK include the following:
Raw Sensor Streams. Developers have access to raw data streams from depth sensor, color camera sensor and the four-element microphone array. These will allow them to build upon the low-level streams generated by the Kinect sensor.
Skeletal Tracking. The SDK has the capability to track the skeleton image of one or two people moving within the Kinect field of view, making it possible to create gesture-driven applications.
Advanced Audio Capabilities. Audio processing capabilities include sophisticated noise suppression and echo cancellation, beam formation to identify the current sound source, and integration with the Windows speech recognition API.
Ease of installation. The SDK quickly installs in a standard way for Windows 7 with no complex configuration required and a complete installer size of less than 100 MB. Developers can get up and running in just a few minutes with a standard standalone Kinect sensor unit widely available at retail.
Extensive documentation. The SDK includes more than 100 pages of high-quality technical documentation. In addition to built-in help files, the documentation includes detailed walkthroughs for most samples provided with the SDK.

Microsoft intends to release a commercial version of the SDK at a later date; details will be released when they are available. The conversation is on Twitter under the hashtag #Kinect_SDK.
